General questions

Q: Will there be PatchBurn for Mac-OS 9?
A: Simple answer: No! For all you guys out there still working on Mac-OS 9, it really is time to switch to Mac-OS X, you won't regret it!

Q: iDVD 4 recognizes the drive but will not complete a DVD. I installed Patch Burn and was able to ctrl-click and select my drive in iDVD. The burning process made it to Stage 4 but then it stayed there all night long and never finished. What did I do wrong?
A: Save the DVD as an image file and burn it later using Disc Utility. In most cases this will work around the problem.

Mac-OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar) and PatchBurn 1.1

Q: What drives does PatchBurn support?
A: Theoretically any! There are some drives, PatchBurn can generate a correct profile for, but they won't work correctly. Some of those drive I currently know of are made by Samsung.

Q: I can not find my drive in the right list. Which one should I choose?
A: Keep in mind: the right column shows a list of drivers already installed in your system. PatchBurn 1.1 replaces one of theses drivers. You should select the last entry beginning with the same vendor name your drive is from. If your drives vendor does not appear in the right list, read the next question and answer:

Q: I can not find the vendor of my drive in the right list. What should I select?
A: You have to apply two patches. Do as follows:
- start PatchBurn
- open the "experts mode" by clicking at the little triangle in upper right corner
- select your CD writer in the left column
- select the entry "MITSUMI QPS" in the right column
- click on "patch vendor name" in the experts mode (this is the first patch)
- select "MITSUMI CR-487ETE" in the right column
- click on "Patch" (this is the second patch)
- restart your Mac
- you're done!

Q: Does PatchBurn support CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives?
A: No, PatchBurn only supports CDRW and DVD writers. CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives won't need PatchBurn. Since they are read only devices, they should be supported by Mac-OS X right out of the box.

Q: How do I remove PatchBurn 1?
A:
Use these four steps to restore all original drivers:
-
start PatchBurn 1
- open the "experts mode" by clicking at the little triangle in the upper right corner
- click on "restore original drivers"
- restart your Mac

Q: Will PatchBurn give me write support for double layer (8.5 GB) media?
A: PatchBurn will not give you double layer support. This is up to the burn engine inside Mac-OS X, PatchBurn has no influence on that. For double layer support please use Roxio Toast Titanium 6.0.7 or newer.

Mac-OS X 10.3.x (Panther) and PatchBurn 3

Q: What drives does PatchBurn 3 support?
A: Theoretically any! There are some drives, PatchBurn can generate a correct profile for, but they won't work correctly. Some of those drive I currently know of are made by Samsung.

Q: Will PatchBurn help me to use CD/DVD writers with iTunes?
A: Yes, this exactly is the main purpose of PatchBurn. After installing the PatchBurn profile, iTunes should recognize the writer and burn audio CDs as well as MP3 CDs. Don't forget to choose the writer in the iTunes preferences before writing the first CD.

Q: Will PatchBurn help me to use CD/DVD writers with iDVD?
A: Yes, with some restrictions: You need to have a G4 processor or newer. iDVD will not run on a G3 processor or older. Furtheron you need to have at least Mac-OS X 10.3.6 and iDVD 4.0. iDVD is not officially supported by PatchBurn 3, but it may work, if you are using an internal DVD-writer connected to the IDE-port. If you are using an external DVD-writer via Firewire, activate the button "Install support for iDVD 4" in the "Experts Mode". PatchBurn 3 then installs two resource files called "Hurz" and "Pfurz" in your home directory. If these files are present, iDVD shows an hidden dialog box to burn to an external DVD-writer or to write a disc image onto the harddrive. To get this hidden dialog in iDVD press and hold the control-key while clicking two times at the "burn DVD" symbol (lower right corner of the iDVD window). Caution! This is a hack! Apple may remove this feature in future versions of iDVD. It should work so far in iDVD 4.0 and 4.0.1.

Q: PatchBurn 3 does not find any writer, although it is connected and switched on. It asks me to save and send the logfile.
A: This issue mostly appears with older CD writers connected via USB (like Freecom, HP, Mitsumi, QPS or Sony) or SCSI. In Mac-OS X you will need a special low level driver for the USB or SCSI interface. Contact the support of the drives vendor to get this driver. After installing it, your writer should appear in PatchBurn.

Q: Will PatchBurn expire?
A: Only the installer will expire. Profiles you've already installed will remain intact and working. If the Installer has expired and you like to install additional profiles, please download the current PatchBurn version from this website.

Q: How do I remove PatchBurn 3?
A: Use these four steps to remove all profiles installed by PatchBurn 3:
-
start PatchBurn 3
- open the "experts mode" by clicking at the little triangle in the upper right corner
- click on "remove PatchBurn profiles"
- restart your Mac

Q: Does PatchBurn 3 give me support for viewing video DVDs?
A: No, all reading capabilities are enabled in Mac-OS X by default. PatchBurn has no influence on that. If your drive does not read DVDs or CDs, there must be another hardware problem e.g. wrong jumper settings, defective cable or defective drive. But there might be a solution for using external drives. Try the excellent playerpatch.

Q: I installed a PatchBurn 3 profile and my writer is working now. But the burning speeds showed up in some system dialogs are wrong. My writer should burn at much higher speeds.
A: This is an issue of the burning engine inside Mac-OS X. PatchBurn has no way to change this yet. Maybe a future version will give you the opportunity to set driving speeds by hand. I am working on that.
